Tangled Tides (Sea Monster Memoirs #1)- Karen Amanda Hooper
What’s a better read than a mermaid story for Memorial Day? Tangled Tides seemed like a good choice, but I’m not going to lie—-Tangled Tides was just okay for me. The first few pages I had no idea if it was a boy or a girl protagonist. Then Yara is like “hey let’s just run off with this stranger.” Did someone not teach her stranger danger? Cause for real, that’s just dumb. After those initial problems, Tangled Tides rallied a bit with interesting world creation and mythology. As the story continued the entangled relationships seemed a bit confused for me. In the end, I was kind of just “meh” about it. If you’re looking for a quick mermaid read for the beach then this hits the mark, just don’t expect much more than that.
Overall: B
Tangled Tides is out now and free for Amazon Prime users right now ($4.99 for other Amazon users). Check it out here.

My Take on the Barnes and Nobles Color Nook →
I know last week I said I was getting a Kindle, but now Nook has a touch screen color Nook. AND you can read full ebooks in the store. Is it a game changer?
I say, no. If I wanted something like that I’d get an ipad which doesn’t have the weird DRM (digital rights management) issues. Also remember when my Vlad Tod Book 5 ebook from Barnes and Nobles was held hostage by the website and then ended up being full of errors? Yea, I didn’t forget that either.

Kindle will be able to Lend Ebooks! →
Similar to the Nook’s lending beta program, Kindle users will soon be able to share ebooks with fellow users! Welp, that pretty much seals the deal on me getting a Kindle.
Similar to a library, lending titles can be loaned for up to 14 days. The publisher or rights holder will determine what books will be available for lending.

You got that wrong: 10 Reasons the Kindle Will Fail →
In 2007, Center Networks published a list of reasons the Amazon Kindle would fail. I think at this point, they might want to retract that article, no? The full list is here with some amusing points.
Hat tip to Galley Cat in the title link.

Barnes and Nobles is currently holding my ebook hostage.
On Wednesday I purchased the fifth and last book in The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod: Twelfth Grade Kills by Heather Brewer. I specifically chose an ebook because I wanted it immediately; I didn’t want to wait for it to ship; I didn’t want to drive 20 minutes away to a Barnes and Nobles; I wanted it right that second. I went with Barnes and Nobles’ ebook instead of Amazon’s because I already have the ereader app for B&N (and because Amazon has done some questionable stuff when it comes to publishing and ebooks).
I purchased. I was charged. I went to download and got a “our website is down for routine maintenance.” Fine, I’ll wait till tomorrow (Tomorrow currently being today.) Today, I went to try to download it again. I click the green download button, it goes grey like it is doing something, then nothing happens. A few seconds later, the button goes green again. UH WHAT? Click green, goes grey, goes green, does nothing. Repeat. My anger and frustration are growing. I just want to read the book I paid for!

Amazon really is setting upself up as the next evil empire →
Apparently Amazon learned from the Macmillan PR disaster that yanking books from their site isn’t the way to go, now instead they are cutting prices drastically on hardcovers to pressure publishers into agreeing to THEIR ebook pricing structure. Poor Penguin! Really, I like shopping at Amazon, but this is below the belt Amazon, below the belt.
